58 year old Nigerian national, Liameen Olayinka has been visiting Zulekha Hospital since 2009. Having undergone a weight loss surgery to treat obesity, Liameen also suffered from bilateral hip AVN and a very deformed hip.

Being a lawyer by profession, Liameen job demanded standing and need to walk long distances. He visited from Nigeria because he was suffering from this problem since a very long time and wanted to get operated. And because he continued walking on those hips, he faced additional deformities; not only in the femoral head but even the acetabulum (the socket of the hip bone, into which the head of the femur fits) and there were deficiencies in the acetabulum.

“Now operating such cases is very challenging. So we decided to do a staged hip replacement for him. We did one hip, the right hip first for him. And we were able to do a very good uncemented hip. Once his right hip was done, he was very satisfied. And he insisted to undergo the other hip surgery very soon. And we did his other hip and as we could see, the patient is completely pain-free; walking very comfortably,” commented Dr. Rahul Shivadey, Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon at Zulekha Hospital, Dubai.

Since the day of his second surgery, Liameen’s pain has subsided. His dependence on analgesics has reduced.
“The outcomes of the surgery are very good. The patient is very happy. I would not only like to thank my operating room team but also Dr. Chetan Prakash who was assisting me in the surgery. As a result the patient will be able to go back to his day to day routine, very fast and very effectively.”  Added Dr. Shivadey.

Speaking of his experience, Liameen said, “The initial hip replacement surgery was in March, precisely on the 18th of March by Dr. Rahul Shivadey and he did my second left hip replacement surgery on the 22nd or 24th of October. Words cannot thank him enough for what he has done for me, because I feel much better now. I thank him and his entire staff for their professionalism and I thank Zulekha Hospital.”
Osteonecrosis of the hip is a painful condition that occurs when the blood supply to the head of the femur (thighbone) is disrupted. Because bone cells need a steady supply of blood to stay healthy, osteonecrosis can ultimately lead to destruction of the hip joint and severe arthritis.

Osteonecrosis is also called avascular necrosis (AVN) or aseptic necrosis. Although it can occur in any bone, osteonecrosis most often affects the hip. In many cases, both hips are affected by the disease.
